Both compounds are vitamin C. L-ascorbic acid is the purest form of vitamin C and is very effective but can be very unstable. It oxidizes when exposed to heat or sunlight and sometimes causes irritation in the skin. Sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP) is a derivative of L-ascorbic acid and is much more stable, and in return gentler on your skin. Because of its stability, it is more effective on your skin. Studies have shown SAP is also a great acne fighting agent.
We use 5% of sodium ascorbyl phosphate in our Elite Glow Serum. Keep in mind, the percentage for effectiveness is different for various forms of vitamin C, and therefore cannot be compared just on a percentage basis. The effectiveness our serum would be equivalent to a 10-15% L-ascorbic acid serum.
Cleanse, tone, treat (Elite Glow Serum), moisturize. In that order! Your moisturizer can be a sunscreen or a moisturizer with sunscreen. Never skip your sunscreen! You can also use the Elite Glow Serum in the AM or PM.
